Case Study: Esusu's Journey to Financial Efficiency

No company can maximize its impact without the right tools.

The Client

Esusu is transforming financial access for renters and improving property performance for owners and operators across the United States. Headquartered in New York, this innovative fintech company has developed specialized solutions for rent reporting and data analytics in the rental housing market.

The company's mission is simple: to dismantle housing barriers for working families by helping renters achieve financial stability and growth. Its efforts create a win-win not only for renters but also for owner/operators, providing a comprehensive guide for the entire financial journey. For renters, Esusu helps report on-time rent payments to credit bureaus, building credit histories that might otherwise be difficult to establish. The company also helps property managers optimize returns while fostering positive tenant relationships.

With these dual-purpose goals, Esusu bridges the gap between renters seeking financial inclusion and property managers looking to enhance their operations with data-driven insights.

The Problem

Esusu's financial operations were bogged down by a fragmented and labor-intensive billing process that involved multiple platforms. The company's workflow first captured contract information in Salesforce, transferred it to an internal tracking system, and then routed the data through Cashflow360 for billing. This convoluted approach created inefficiencies, increased error risks, and required significant and time-consuming manual intervention.

As the business grew, Esusu needed a centralized financial operation that matched the strengths of its existing system.

Tawana Muchatuta, a consultant to Esusu, found the answer to the company’s problems in an unlikely place.

“Funny enough, Reddit was what sold it for me,” he says. “Lots of good reviews on Reddit, and we then did an exploratory call with Zone, and I think the rest is sort of history.” On Reddit, Muchatuta found out that ZoneBilling is fully configurable, and automates and connects recurring billing, revenue recognition, and reporting in an auditable workflow inside the walls of NetSuite.

Esusu decided to implement ZoneBilling with its current NetSuite ERP system to consolidate billing processes and add crucial revenue recognition features.

The fintech company also wanted to implement this new system while preserving its established Salesforce integration, which was essential for sales and customer relationship management. The company needed a solution that solidified its financial operations without disrupting established workflows and data-capture methods, so it turned to SuiteDynamics for help.

In the world of private equity, creating operational value has become increasingly critical as the market evolves. With exit timelines extending and competition for deals intensifying, PE firms are looking beyond financial engineering to drive returns. One emerging strategy that's gaining traction is the consolidation of NetSuite instances across portfolio companies. The Hidden Challenge of System Fragmentation As PE portfolios grow through acquisition, a common pattern emerges: multiple portfolio companies operating on separate NetSuite instances. While each system may work effectively in isolation, the fragmentation creates significant operational inefficiencies at the portfolio level: Redundant Licensing Costs: Each separate instance requires its own licensing structure , creating unnecessary expenses that directly impact EBITDA. Manual Consolidation Effort: Finance teams spend countless hours extracting, transforming, and manually consolidating data from disparate systems. Inconsistent Processes: Basic business functions are handled differently across portfolio companies, limiting standardization efforts. Limited Portfolio-Wide Visibility: Gaining insight across the entire portfolio requires extensive manual effort, delaying strategic decision-making. Integration Challenges: Onboarding new acquisitions becomes increasingly complex when each company maintains its own environment.
